PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Avery W. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Avery is a sophomore at Stanford University. Passionate about the intersection between technology and ethics, she is pursuing a major in Symbolic Systems with a concentration in computational social sciences; she is also very passionate about women’s issues and enjoys taking classes in a wide range of disciplines. Avery is originally from Washington, D.C. and graduated cum laude from the National Cathedral School in 2020. At National Cathedral, Avery was a four-year member and captain of the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. She also served as a student ambassador and the student director of a peer mentoring program. Avery is also an avid writer; during her time at National Cathedral, Avery won numerous regional awards for her creative non-fiction, most notably the Scholastic Art and Literature American Voices Award. Her love of writing also extends to playwriting; during high school, she wrote, published and directed an original short play in conjunction with Samuel French Young Playwrights. Additionally, before starting at Stanford, Avery took a gap year, working at both Stride Learning, the largest online education provider in the United States, and the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund, a startup incubator out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Outside of the classroom, Avery is a Stanford campus tour guide and an Executive Board member of Stanford Women in Business (SWIB). She currently serves as the co-director of SWIB’s annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit, an annual business conference for high school students. During her free time, Avery also loves listening to Taylor Swift, attending SoulCycle classes, and spending time with friends!
