PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Jacob T. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Nice to meet you, I’m Jacob! I was born and raised in sunny Southern California, in a small beach town called Manhattan Beach. I’ve grown up loving the ocean, playing beach volleyball, and exploring beautiful Los Angeles. My parents are both doctors, and they’ve instilled in me a love of medicine and science, and I hope to one day follow in their footsteps and become a doctor myself. In high school, I decided to take my passion for science to the next level, and embark on a research journey. For 2.5 years in high school, I worked in a research lab at UCLA, studying the molecular mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s Disease. Now at Stanford, I’m working in a research lab that studies the cellular biology of pediatric brain cancer. Working as a researcher, I found an incredible community of brilliant individuals, and was impassioned by the generation-spanning effort that is science. These incredible experiences have led me to now want to pursue an MD PhD, out of a newfound love for research. My experience as a researcher gave me a depth of knowledge in the field of chemistry, biology, and math, as I worked on not only wet lab experiments, but also experiments with computational biology. However, out of these three subjects, I’ve always had a particular love for chemistry. In high school, I ran a private tutoring business for three years, where I specialized in tutoring Honors and AP Chemistry. I later became the AP Chemistry TA for a teacher who is equally talented as she is kind, and who continues to inspire me to be a lifelong educator myself. Aside from chemistry, I have experience tutoring math, english, creative writing, spanish, SAT Test Prep, and PSAT Test prep. I scored a 1560 on the SAT, was a national merit scholar, and am a proud fluent Spanish speaker. Outside of school, I love discovering new music, experimenting with fashion, and trying new foods.

I’m beyond excited to work with your child to help them reach their fullest potential! Whether it’s finally understanding chemistry without memorizing, connecting them to research internships, or just helping them with their math homework, I’m here to help! I’m looking forward to meeting you, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish!

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Our mentorship sessions happen virtually over Zoom. It’s important to get a sense of how someone’s personality can come through on a video call. The best way to ensure your student is excited about learning is to have someone on the other side that they look forward to talking to.
