PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Joseph R. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Joseph is a junior pursuing a bachelor's in International Relations with a minor in Spanish from Stanford. His passion for IR began in high school when he started attending Model United Nations conferences as a delegate and eventually a chair. He gradually increased his involvement in Model UN throughout his high school career and eventually was named Director General of Model United Nations San Antonio XXIV. In his role as Director General, he was responsible for teaching nearly 80 of his peers to become chairs in each of the over 20 distinct committee rooms at the conference. His efforts helped attract a record breaking 1200 delegates to the conference, making MUNSA the largest student-led Model UN conference in the Western hemisphere. In addition to Model UN, Joseph played basketball for his school and participated in student government and Spanish Honor Society. He also was part of a folk band and mariachi group in high school, which developed his love for music, specifically his love of the guitar. At Stanford, his IR and Spanish interests have coalesced into a focus on Latin American Studies, which is the concentration of his IR major. After Stanford, he hopes to join the Foreign Service and work to inform and implement policy in Latin America. Outside of his academic interests, Joseph is a sports fanatic. He grew up attending University of Texas football games as well as San Antonio Spurs basketball games with his father, and will watch just about any other sporting event on TV when he has free time.
