PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Laura R. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Laura majored in International Politics at Georgetown University. She minored in African Studies and took courses in environmental studies and international development. In high school, Laura's favorite subjects were English, History, French, and U.S. politics. She tended to struggle with chemistry... Some of the topics that most spark Laura's interest include clean energy, geology and earth science, political philosophy, law, the energy grid, climate technologies and investment, African affairs/politics, and ecological conservation. Oh, and romantic poetry. Laura has worked on a backcountry crew team in the forests and deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. There, she learned wildfire mitigation and stone masonry skills-- she even got a chainsaw operating license from the U.S. Forest Service. She has interned at the U.S. State Department in the Bureau of Energy Resources, where she worked on mineral and mining policies. She has worked a hostess in a restaurant, a camp counselor, a dishwasher, a research assistant, a babysitter, and even an ice-cream scooper. Most recently, Laura has been interested in gut microbiome health, yoga, and personal finance. She loves teaching, learning, and working with younger mentees!
