PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Laura T. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Laura is a senior at Duke University, where she is majoring in Economics with a certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Laura grew up a New York City native and attended the Spence School, where she first gained a passion for analytical subjects such as mathematics, economics, and statistics. In high school, she was an active member of Student Council, where in her senior year she served as the Student Body President. Through this role, she performed as the primary liaison between students, administration, and the Board of Trustees by hosting 30+ weekly assemblies for Upper Schoolers!

In her junior year of high school, she developed a passion for economics and finance when she helped found The Junior Economic Club of New York City, a nonprofit that hosts free workshops, webinars, and forums for high schoolers across 31 private and public schools to learn more about economics subjects. Her own high school passion project makes Laura eager to help inspire other high schoolers to create a project of their own.

At Duke, she continues to see through her passion for finance in the Duke Association for Business Oriented Women, where as a Finance Events Committee Member, she works to connect female undergraduates with professional opportunities and resources in the business industry. After graduation, Laura will work as a Private Credit Analyst at Blackstone in New York.

In her free time, Laura enjoys baking cookies, swimming, watching CBS game shows, and trying new coffee shops! She is excited to connect with young, ambitious students of all ages to inspire them to seek academic curiosity!

Laura has truly made math tutoring something my daughter Alisa looks forward to. Alisa hadn’t been particularly interested in math before, but what a difference a great mentor can make—Laura has brought both the joy of understanding geometry and a newfound appreciation for math into her life. Her supportive, warm-hearted presence, along with her genuine love for the subject, has been transforming Alisa’s attitude toward math. We feel so fortunate to have crossed paths with her. With admiration, Tomoko
