PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Martin S. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Martin is a junior at Columbia University studying Neuroscience. He originally started off as a pre-med but wasn’t very open to the idea of staying in school for much longer. Martin instead chose to pursue a career in finance but wanted to stay true to STEM roots and continue studying something he was passionate about. Martin has lived in over six countries and travelled to many more. Originally from Taiwan, Martin was born in Japan but has also spent significant time in Singapore. His favorite travel destinations are Germany and South Africa. In high school, Martin was involved in varsity swimming/baseball as well as community service. During that time, he had his first taste in teaching: volunteering to do SAT/ACT tutoring for disadvantaged students. In college, he has started a social justice initiative focused on lobbying for the fixing of sanctuary city legislation with the greater goal of expanding immigrant rights. On campus, he also runs a $50,000 student-run investment fund that invests in long/short equities (or stocks). After graduation, Martin will work in the financial services industry as an investment banker working on M&A transactions and strategic advisory.
