PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

I’ve been a Curious Cardinals mentor since August 2023I am passionate about mentoring students in the areas of Video Production and Film.

Matthew C. (IN A NUTSHELL)

My name is Matthew and I am a California born-and-raised filmmaker. In high school, I had always focused on STEM but had a very big interest in the arts, so when I went to college I took the jump and decided to pursue a film/video degree. I've had the chance to work on dozens of videos from short films and interviews to documentaries and experimental fictions, all with very diverse and interesting subject matters that I can help bring to a tutoring session. From writing and producing to directing and editing, I've learned so much about how to work with different people and how to make projects fun and interesting. Thus, I'm especially excited to be a Curious Cardinals mentor to work on any passion projects that might come my way!

Another thing about me is that I am a big gamer. I've spent a lot of time on two specific games, League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, and have reached the threshold of top 0.01 percent of players in the world for both. But I love all games, including but not limited to Skyrim, Pokemon, card games, and even Toontown. When I was younger, these games used to get in the way of my success because I was playing them instead of doing homework. Later, however, I began to use gaming as a way to improve myself while still having a lot of fun. I began introducing a growth mindset to whenever I played and realized that there was so much to learn in something that most people deemed unproductive. This has revolutionized the way I see the world and I'm sure that I can make sure that any of my mentees' passions, no matter what it may be, can shine through and make them into the best person they can be!

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Our mentorship sessions happen virtually over Zoom. It’s important to get a sense of how someone’s personality can come through on a video call. The best way to ensure your student is excited about learning is to have someone on the other side that they look forward to talking to.
