PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Matthew M. (IN A NUTSHELL)

As an academic tutor and student mentor at Curious Cardinals, I help high school students achieve their academic and personal goals through personalized online learning and coaching. I specialize in tutoring subjects such as psychology and poetry and mentoring students on other topics such as college applications, leadership development, and social impact.

I am passionate about creating a supportive and engaging learning environment for my students, and empowering them to pursue their interests and aspirations.

I am also a master's student in Sustainability Science and Practice at Stanford University, where I explore the interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to address the complex and urgent challenges of environmental and social sustainability.

I have a strong background in psychology and science, technology, and society, which I studied as an undergraduate at Stanford University, graduating with honors. I have applied my knowledge and skills to various research, consulting, and leadership projects, such as working as a public policy consultant for the World Bank, a marketing strategist for the Marriage Pact, and a co-chair for the Stanford Disability Alliance. I am always eager to both teach (& learn!) new things, collaborate with diverse teams, and contribute to positive change whenever & wherever πŸ¦‰πŸ“š !

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Our mentorship sessions happen virtually over Zoom. It’s important to get a sense of how someone’s personality can come through on a video call. The best way to ensure your student is excited about learning is to have someone on the other side that they look forward to talking to.

Stanford University II

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT (SO FAR)

Making meaningful connections with friends back at school (🌲 ):

Trying to lead with a direct approach that allows others to critically envision + examine new possibilities & the feasibility of their thoughts.

Scaffolding/coaching students in their respective subjects, supporting them to reach their goals.

Leaving life a little better than it was originally left through active, strengths-based leadership.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

What advice would you give your middle or high school self?

Why does mentorship matter to you?

How did you spend your summers in high school?
