PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Matthew R. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Matt is currently a Junior at Yale studying Statistics and Data Science. He is most passionate about teaching topics in mathematics and data analysis. Through teaching about these subjects’ connections to real life topics like sports, music, and politics, he hopes to develop students’ intellectual curiosity, which he believes serves as the perfect foundation for future academic success in the subject.

Matt is originally from Cold Spring Harbor, NY (on the north shore of Long Island) where he went to public school, graduated valedictorian of his class, and was awarded the National Merit Scholarship: one of 2,500 recipients out of 1.5 million PSAT test takers. In high school he was a New York All State trumpet player, where he specialized in classical music and jazz improvisation.

For the past 4 years, Matt has co-run a social skills group for teens on the autism spectrum alongside a registered therapist, where they create curriculum and hold group and individual sessions to help teens adapt to their academic and social environments.

At Yale, Matt manages the portfolio of the Urban Philanthropic Fund, a student-run investment group that uses its returns to provide grants to New Haven nonprofits. In terms of hobbies, Matt is an avid skier. He is currently a member of the Yale Ski Team, where he competes in slalom and giant slalom events along the East Coast during the winter season. As much as Matt loves the East Coast, his favorite mountains (Alta, Jackson Hole, and Telluride) lie out west.

He loves all kinds of music. Whether it's jazz, electronic, rap, or classical, you name it and he probably has a Spotify playlist. Matt’s current musical endeavor is that he is trying to learn how to DJ!

As a tutor, Matt strives to be more than someone who assigns work and then walks you through an answer key. He believes that learning comes easiest when a personal connection exists between the student and the teacher.
