PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Olivia Z. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Olivia is a senior at Yale University studying Ethics, Politics & Economics. She is originally from Long Island, NY, but has since moved with her family to Manhattan. Olivia is passionate about Ethics, Politics & Economics because the intersection of these areas align with many of our world’s most pressing issues; climate change, racial injustice, and inequality can all be understood through the interdisciplinary lens of EP&E. Her passion for executive functioning comes from the way her parents instilled it in her; helping others develop skills of teamwork, leadership, decision-making, working toward goals, critical thinking, adaptability, and emotional awareness helps create the next generation of citizens and leaders. On campus, she was the Publisher of the Yale Daily News, and was responsible for the over-arching financial health of the country's oldest college daily newspaper. She was also the social chair of Alpha Phi for two years, the best part of which was meeting people from all corners of Yale's campus and planning fun events for her closest friends on the weekends. Finally, Olivia is part of Yale's Alpine Ski Team, the Yale Alumni Fund, the Admissions Office, and does research on corporate sustainability with Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld. In her free time, you can find her trying out restaurants in New Haven with friends (shared tapas and a great tikka masala are her current favorites), doing hot yoga (working on a headstand), or avidly re-arranging her Google Calendar.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Our mentorship sessions happen virtually over Zoom. It’s important to get a sense of how someone’s personality can come through on a video call. The best way to ensure your student is excited about learning is to have someone on the other side that they look forward to talking to.
