PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Saphal J. (IN A NUTSHELL)

My name is Saphal, I study at Duke. I am studying computer science. I was in born in Nepal and moved to the United States when I was in 2nd grade. I have been mentoring since I was in high school for over 4 years in all areas. I was involved in community service through my high school program STAR (Students Together Assisting Refugees) in this club I organized drives to help refugees globally. I have created a virtual exhibit through an internship program for local students in North Carolina to help them learn more about the 150 faces of Durham.

I am involved with athletics at Duke. I am a practice player for the Duke Women's Basketball team and a manager for the football team. I have been a student-athlete my whole life.

I love being a mentor and will do my best to help my mentees facilitate new ideas that interest them and help them achieve their goals!

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Our mentorship sessions happen virtually over Zoom. It’s important to get a sense of how someone’s personality can come through on a video call. The best way to ensure your student is excited about learning is to have someone on the other side that they look forward to talking to.
