PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Sarah M. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Sarah is a 2023 graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, with a minor in psychology and certificate in marketing. While at Northwestern, she wrote for a variety of on-campus publications, interned with March Madness, CAA, SLAM and the Chicago Blackhawks as well as covering the 2023 NCAA DI Women's Lacrosse Champion Northwestern Wildcats. As the oldest of three girls, Sarah hopes to inspire young women to find their own passions and not be afraid to disrupt the status quo. In her free time, she loves reading, doing yoga, and listening to podcasts.

A native of Los Angeles, the tangible and vibrant feeling of the connection between sports and community in high school and the larger city drew her into sports.

She now works at the NBA in New York City, creating authentic stories through branded content campaigns on social media.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT (SO FAR)

The accomplishment I am most proud is co-founding UNCUT Northwestern, a student-athlete storytelling platform that originated at UNC-Chapel Hill. As the Head of Operations, I oversaw all storytelling initiatives with Northwestern student-athletes in written forms and on social media, including website design, outreach, and recruiting students to join our staff. This was not an easy process, but I learned so much about myself and what it means to be a good leader throughout our launch, including setting up meetings with our athletic department, learning from other UNCUT chapters, and creating outreach plans and meeting with student-athletes.

Getting to create our branding, advertise our stories to other publications on campus, and more has been the most enriching experience I have had thus far. Marketing, project management, teamwork, and organization were absolutely crucial to successfully launching UNCUT.

It has been incredible to see this project come to life from start to finish, and I'm honored to have left a legacy at Northwestern that combines all my passions: storytelling, sports and mental health.
