PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Sean L. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Sean is a senior at Duke University double majoring in Statistics and Computer Science, with a minor in Sociology.

Growing up, he ran cross country and track, delving deep into doing race/meet projections to help his high school team. Sean further pursued this interest in college by founding the Duke Sports Analytics Club. In the past two years, he's lead the club to establish multiple partnerships with Duke Division I sports teams such as soccer, lacrosse, and baseball.

Furthermore, Sean has had extensive teaching experience through leading programming/ technical skill workshops in both Python and R. In a recent personal project, he used machine learning modeling to analyze the impact of NCAA College Basketball transfers. Outside of sports, he's participated in numerous hackathons and internships focused on data analysis and machine learning.

In his free time, you can find Sean watching Chicago Bulls basketball, watching standup comedy, playing Pokemon showdown, or listening to neuroscience podcasts during a workout. Sean also is an avid traveler, most recently visiting Australia to study abroad. It's his mission to help others pursue their dreams whether it is sports and math related aspirations or otherwise!

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Our mentorship sessions happen virtually over Zoom. It’s important to get a sense of how someone’s personality can come through on a video call. The best way to ensure your student is excited about learning is to have someone on the other side that they look forward to talking to.
